Celebrating the greatest moments of The Three Lions
Give that man a knighthood!
In 2001 England played Greece at Old Trafford. It was the last game of the World Cup Qualification group stage.
“The Three Lions” had to get at least a tie, in order to qualify directly to the 2002 World Cup.
England was down 2-1 to the Greeks towards the end of the game. All of England was desperate for a miracle.
Then three minutes into added time, Sheringham was pushed. The referee blew his whistle and awarded a free-kick to England.
With seconds left of the game, David Beckham stepped up to take it.
The rest is history.
