The story of the 1954 World Cup final between Germany and Hungary is truly legendary.

The two teams had already met each other once during the tournament. Germany lost that game with a whopping 8-2. A popular legend partially blames the dry weather for this humiliating defeat. Because Germany’s captain and star play Fritz Walter could not play well in warm weather, since he had suffered from malaria years prior.

However, when the Germans faced Hungary again in the final in Bern, things went quite differently.
The story goes that when the game began, it started to rain heavily. This change in weather was just what Fritz Walter and Germany needed to win. The German captain led his team to play the game of their lives. They won the final 3-2 in what has since been dubbed “Das Wunder von Bern” (The Miracle of Bern)
