“The Miracle of Instanbul”

The 2005 Champions League final is the most memorable game in Liverpool history.
The Reds played AC Milan in Instanbul in one of the most dramatic finals ever.

Here Liverpool was off to a horrid start and went behind 3-0 in the first half.
But Rafa Benitez’ squad would not lie down.
In the second half, Liverpool made an absolutely astonishing comeback. First captain Steven Gerrard reduced Milan’s lead to 3-1 before Šmicer and Alonso scored another two to level the score.
None of the two teams managed to score again during the game. Therefore it all had to be decided on penalties
Liverpool won the shootout and the comeback was complete.
This final will forever be known in Liverpool folklore as “the Miracle of Istanbul”.
